Sex- Is It Really So Hard To Talk About?

For those keeping track, I write paranormal romance, but it does have its more erotic moments. I like sex- not afraid to admit it. I enjoy writing about it, and delving into the scene, making it something you can visualize in HD clarity.

So it only seemed natural that I spin off into writing erotica as well, right? Hmm, apparently not. I’ve noticed people love to read it, but no one dares talk about it. Why not? If it’s well-written, what does it matter? So the words are more graphic than, say, your favorite Nora Roberts romance? So it’s more Laurell K. Hamilton than Fern Michaels. That’s okay, right?

So I posted this status on Facebook yesterday and I swear I hear crickets chirping:

So…. who here likes dirty works and sexy scenes? *raises eyebrows* There should be at least a few hands in the air…. I’m looking for ideas of what works and what doesn’t…. if you don’t want to comment, please send me a message.

No big deal, right? Again- wrong. One friend hit the “like” button. No one commented, no one else “liked” it, and certainly no one sent a message. Which makes me wonder…

Why is the topic of sex, your reading likes and dislikes when it comes to sex, so taboo?

  1. I worry that if I start talking about it, people are immediately going to form a mental picture of me doing it. And if I wanted people to have “that” kind of mental picture of me, I’d have become a porn star. 😉

    • Okay, that I can understand. Worry about how people will view you or see you. I guess maybe I’m different- I’ve got no problem discussing sex- in detail, in writing, in movies, in real life. I’m just not bothered. I figure since it’s a natural act it shouldn’t be something we shy away from talking about.

  2. Have you ever thought about writing an e-book or guest authoring on other blogs? I have a blog based on the same information you discuss and would love to have you share some stories/information. I know my audience would enjoy your work. If you’re even remotely interested, feel free to shoot me an email.
